John D Firth (Author)
Dr Firth trained in medicine in Cambridge (preclinical) and Oxford (clinical), worked as a junior doctor in London, spent 11 years in Oxford (half doing clinical work and half in physiology and then molecular biology laboratory work), before returning to an NHS consultant post in Cambridge on the Addenbrooke’s kidney unit in 1996.
John has a particular interest in writing, editing and teaching. He is one of the three editors of the Oxford Textbook of Medicine, the standard general medical textbook (5th edition published in April 2010), and is editor-in-chief of the ‘Medical Masterclass’ (12 books, CD, website), produced by the Royal College of Physicians of London to help those attempting to pass the main UK postgraduate clinical medical examination (MRCP). He is Director of Clinical Studies in the College, and his teaching was recognized by the University by the award of a Pilkington Prize in 2010.
